New black Colored wheat with high anthocyanin content:-NABI MG

Due to their antioxidant activity, anthocyanins are of increasing interest for nutritionists, food scientists and plant breeders. Anthocyanins in wheat grains are expressed in either the pericarp or aleurone layer.Advanced breeding lines with high anthocyanin content can be identified by simple extraction methods and spectrophotometric measurements.

Development
Colored wheat lines were raised through conventional plant breeding approach and are
adapted to local growing conditions. Exotic colored wheat lines were crossed with high
yielding Indian wheat cultivars namely PBW550, PBW621 and HD2967 that were selected
and multiplied.

Origin
The blue wheat has color in the aleurone layer of seed which is due to chromosome
substitution of Agropyron elongatum {4E (4D)} or chromosome translocation of Thinopyrum
ponticum in wheat (4B). The purple wheat color is because of the anthocyanins in the
pericarp layer of seeds. The purple color is due to stable mutation selected long time back.Black color is a combination of both the colors. Our chemical analysis has shown that color is
due to the presence of 26 different types of anthocyanins.
